Senior Power Systems Engineer
$160,000–$190,000 year
HybridDenver, Colorado, United States
Job Summary
Develop and maintain in-house power system models for hyperscale data centers, including onsite generation, utility interconnections, and microgrids. Lead electromagnetic transient studies using PSCAD/EMT tools to evaluate dynamic performance of generation systems and hybrid power architectures. Execute advanced simulations with PowerWorld, PSS®E, and Python-based batch workflows to validate system compliance with utility, ISO, and regional reliability requirements. Support the full project lifecycle from concept development through commissioning, including grid-performance assessments, load smoothing analysis, and field validation of BESS and UPS systems. Collaborate with utilities, consultants, and suppliers to optimize generation sizing and ensure operational readiness for mission-critical electrical infrastructure.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with 7+ years, master's degree with 5+ years, or PhD with 4+ years of relevant experience
- Substantial hands-on experience developing, executing, troubleshooting, and validating PSCAD/EMTDC models and studies
- Strong background in power-system analysis, including generation, transmission, grid integration, and utility interconnection requirements
- Demonstrated experience developing and executing electromagnetic transient studies using PSCAD/EMTDC or a comparable EMTP platform
- Experience performing steady-state and RMS dynamic simulations using PowerWorld, PSS®E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, or an equivalent power-system analysis tool
- Experience using Python to automate simulations, parameter sweeps, sensitivity analyses, results processing, and repeatable study workflows
- Strong understanding of power-system stability, including transient, voltage, frequency, and control-system performance
- Strong understanding of synchronous generators, gas turbines, gas engines, excitation systems, governors, plant controllers, transformers, and protection systems
- Experience developing fit-for-purpose dynamic models and integrating, testing, troubleshooting, and validating OEM-provided models
- Experience performing grid-performance and compliance studies, including LVRT, HVRT, frequency ride-through, frequency response, reactive-power capability, voltage regulation, fault response, and transient stability
- Ability to independently develop models, define and execute study cases, assess the technical validity of results, and communicate findings to internal engineering teams, utilities, consultants, and equipment suppliers
- Must be able to travel up to 20% domestic and international
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with North American utility and ISO/RTO interconnection requirements, including ERCOT, WECC, SPP, PJM, MISO, CAISO, AEP, or similar organizations
- Experience supporting utility interconnection applications, model submissions, grid-compliance testing, commissioning, or field validation
- Experience modeling hyperscale data center electrical systems, AI workload fluctuations, large load ramps, UPS systems, and mission-critical power architectures
- Experience modeling large-scale onsite generation facilities, including gas engines, gas turbines, fuel cells, BESS, or hybrid generation systems
- PSCAD model-development experience involving inverter-based resources, BESS, STATCOMs, UPS systems, microgrids, and plant-level controls
- Experience analyzing islanded operation, black start, load acceptance and rejection, microgrid operation, renewable integration, and N+1 or N+N reliability configurations
- Knowledge of protection coordination, short-circuit analysis, generator protection, SCADA, communications, and plant control systems
- Familiarity with applicable IEEE, NERC, FERC, ISO/RTO, and utility-specific technical requirements
- Experience using version control, model libraries, standardized simulation test benches, and automated technical-reporting workflows
- Professional Engineer license
