Job Summary
Senior Power Electronics Engineer responsible for leading and coordinating electrical design projects within the SPARC team at Commonwealth Fusion Systems. Design, model, simulate, analyze and validate power electronics circuits and converter systems for medium voltage power supplies; define components and specifications; develop test methods from concept through commissioning; collaborate with cross-functional teams and manage procurement/vendor coordination; lead commissioning activities and document design results. Requires 8+ years of power electronics experience with a Bachelor’s degree (or 6+ years with a Master’s) and strong knowledge of inverter topologies, modeling tools (PLECS/PSPICE/MATLAB), semiconductor devices (IGBT/MOSFET), and thermal management; travel and on-site work may be required.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or closely related field
- 8+ years of related experience with power electronics-based systems OR Master’s degree with 6+ years of experience
- Proven track record in design and development of power electronics-based electrical systems (system, protection, control & mechanical integration)
- Knowledge of inverter circuit topologies and benefits/limitations
- Experience with modeling & simulation using tools such as PLECS, PSPICE, MATLAB
- Experience with semiconductor devices (IGBT, MOSFET) and magnetic components (transformers, inductors)
- Fundamental understanding of gate drive circuits, design and device protection
- Experience with packaging design of power conversion equipment and thermal management
- Experience with high power electrical equipment >10MW
- Hands-on testing experience with electrical components, sub-assemblies and systems; use of oscilloscopes and measurement equipment
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to conduct design reviews and present results to diverse audiences
- Willingness to travel or work nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs; work in facilities with industrial hazards and high voltage/current environments
