Job Summary

Senior Naval Architect role at MID/Marine Industrial Design in New Zealand, based in MID’s offices in Auckland, Nelson or Whangārei. Candidate leads design delivery across newbuilding, repair, and conversion projects, mentors junior staff, and manages clients and stakeholders while ensuring compliant, robust designs within budget and scope. Requires strong naval architecture design and analysis capability, CAD/3D modelling, and knowledge of marine engineering standards; professional registration (e.g., RINA) and NZ Defence Force security clearance eligibility are preferred. Must be legally entitled to work in New Zealand and able to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams in a client-focused environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Degree in Naval Architecture or related discipline
  • Professional engineering body registration or membership (e.g. RINA)
  • Minimum 5+ years (Senior) or 3yrs (Experienced) naval architecture experience
  • Naval architecture design and analysis
  • CAD and 3D modelling proficiency
  • Marine engineering standards and compliance knowledge
  • Technical reporting and documentation
  • Project planning and time management
  • Stakeholder communication and client management
  • Team leadership and mentoring
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into practical engineering solutions
  • Be able to lead design delivery and ensure quality, precision, and adherence to standards
  • Ability to obtain NZ Defence Force security clearance
  • Legal entitlement to work in New Zealand
