Senior Mechanical Engineer - Water / Wastewater

Job Summary

Lead defined mechanical design tasks across feasibility, optioneering, concept, outline, and detailed design phases for UK water and wastewater projects. Prepare, check, and coordinate mechanical deliverables including calculations, specifications, datasheets, schedules, P&IDs, layouts, and procurement documentation while managing technical quality, interfaces, scope, budget, and programme. Take ownership of assigned packages, conduct site surveys, and lead technical discussions with clients, operators, suppliers, and contractors. Develop solutions for pumps, pipework, valves, tanks, and packaged plant, coordinating interfaces with multidisciplinary teams including process, civil, and construction. Support CDM/safety-by-design reviews, HAZOP/SWIFT input, and commissioning strategies, reviewing supplier submissions and supporting construction and handover. Mentor engineers and contribute to mechanical standards and delivery improvements.

Required Qualifications

  • BEng/MEng or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering
  • Chartered Engineer status, or significant CEng-level experience while actively progressing towards chartership
  • Typically 6+ years' relevant mechanical engineering design experience
  • Background must be from water, wastewater, biosolids/bioresources or oil & gas
  • Proven ability to deliver mechanical design packages within multidisciplinary projects
  • Strong practical experience with mechanical equipment selection, pumping systems, pipework, valves, hydraulics, layouts and packaged plant
  • Ability to prepare and check mechanical calculations, specifications, datasheets, schedules, reports, drawings and procurement documentation
  • Working knowledge of UK water industry standards, CDM 2015, safety-by-design and relevant mechanical requirements
  • Good commercial awareness and ability to deliver to agreed scope, budget and programme
  • Strong communication skills, including ability to lead technical discussions and present recommendations clearly
  • Right to work in the UK

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with AMP8, WINEP, SROs, D&B, framework, alliance or major capital delivery environments
  • Experience in sludge/bioresources, water reuse, pumping stations, energy recovery, odour control, chemical dosing, package plant, offsite manufacture or low-carbon mechanical solutions
  • Experience with BIM/3D coordination, hydraulic modelling, pump system analysis, digital calculations, Power BI, Python, VBA or advanced Excel
  • Experience supporting FAT/SAT, commissioning, performance testing, HAZOPs, SWIFT reviews or technical assurance reviews
  • Experience mentoring junior staff and improving mechanical workflows, templates or technical standards
