Job Summary
Lead the development and execution of strategic communications and issues management plans, including emergency and crisis communications, to support timely, coordinated messaging for internal and external audiences. Anticipate emerging issues by monitoring the internal and external landscape, conducting scenario planning, and developing proactive strategies. Serve as the university's spokesperson and Public Information Officer during crises, responding to media inquiries and coordinating accurate public communications while providing strategic counsel to leadership on sensitive legal and reputational matters. Manage editorial calendars, produce diverse communications materials, and supervise a high-performing team through recruitment, coaching, and performance management. Develop and monitor communications budgets while maintaining the crisis communications infrastructure and overseeing external vendors.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the required degree
- Five (5) years of professional experience in public relations, communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field
- Supervisory experience with the ability to lead, mentor, and develop high-performing teams
- Master's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field
- Experience working in higher education or another large, complex, mission-driven organization
- Experience leading issues management, crisis communications, or reputation management initiatives within a complex organization
- Experience serving as a communications advisor or spokesperson during high-profile, sensitive, or rapidly evolving situations
- Success leading integrated communications campaigns across print, digital, social media, and multimedia platforms
- Strong media relations experience
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
