Senior Machinist

Job Summary
Fabricate metal and plastic prototype components, execute work orders, and independently plan setups, tooling selections, and inspection methods for low-volume parts. Collaborate with engineers to review designs, identify manufacturability concerns, and support rapid design iterations while providing design consulting and reverse engineering parts as needed. Maintain equipment, ensure the shop remains organized and safe, and mentor less experienced staff on machining best practices and setup techniques. Order tooling and supplies to support operations and lead machine shop enhancement projects to improve workflow and turnaround time.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Computer literacy
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Detail-oriented and quality-focused mindset
- Strong commitment to accuracy, safety, and shop organization
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, models, and verbal instructions
- Strong understanding of tolerances, fits, finishes, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
- Ability to inspect completed work using standard measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges, and pin gauges
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to reverse engineer, modify, repair, or improve existing parts and assemblies
- Strong hands-on experience with manual mills, lathes, saws, grinders, sanders, and general machine shop equipment
- Ability to machine a variety of materials including aluminum, stainless steel, tool steel, plastics, and other engineering materials
- Ability to independently plan setups, select tooling, establish machining sequences, and troubleshoot issues
- Ability to work independently while managing changing priorities and quick-turn requests
- Experience in a medical device, regulated manufacturing, R&D, prototype, or product development environment
Desired Qualifications
- Technical school, trade school, apprenticeship, or machining certificate
- 3+ years of machining experience
- Experience with prototype, short-run, tooling, fixture, or custom component work
- Experience operating ProtoTRAK mills and lathes, especially SX and RX controls
- Strong all-around machining knowledge
- Ability to provide design consulting to engineering
- Ability to independently plan machining approaches, setups, tooling selections, work holding strategies, and inspection methods for prototype and low-volume components
- Ability to mentor less experienced machinists or shop users on safe equipment operation, machining best practices, setup techniques, and inspection methods
- Support continuous improvement efforts
- Basic SolidWorks or CAD experience
- Experience in a medical device, regulated manufacturing, R&D, prototype, or product development environment
