Job Summary
Fabricate metal and plastic prototype components by independently planning setups, selecting tooling, and executing work orders in a modern machine shop. Collaborate with engineers to review designs, identify manufacturability concerns, and support rapid design iterations for cardiovascular treatments. Inspect, troubleshoot, and reverse engineer parts to ensure quality before release, while maintaining equipment and keeping the shop organized and safe. Mentor less experienced staff on safe equipment operation and machining best practices.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Computer literacy
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Detail-oriented and quality-focused mindset
- Strong commitment to accuracy, safety, and shop organization
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, sketches, models, and verbal instructions
- Strong understanding of tolerances, fits, finishes, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
- Ability to inspect completed work using standard measuring equipment such as calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges, and pin gauges
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Ability to reverse engineer, modify, repair, or improve existing parts and assemblies
- Strong hands-on experience with manual mills, lathes, saws, grinders, sanders, and general machine shop equipment
- Ability to machine a variety of materials including aluminum, stainless steel, tool steel, plastics, and other engineering materials
- Ability to independently plan setups, select tooling, establish machining sequences, and troubleshoot issues
- Ability to work independently while managing changing priorities and quick-turn requests
- Experience working directly with engineers to provide manufacturability feedback and support rapid design iterations
- Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, and reverse engineer parts to be remade and or modified
- Ability to independently plan machining approaches, setups, tooling selections, work holding strategies, and inspection methods for prototype and low-volume components
- Ability to provide design consulting to engineering
- Ability to review designs, identify manufacturability concerns, recommend practical improvements, and support rapid design iterations
- Ability to identify opportunities to improve shop workflow, equipment utilization, tooling organization, safety, and turnaround time
- Ability to verify dimensions, finishes, fit, and function before releasing completed work to engineering or manufacturing teams
- Ability to maintain high standards for part quality
- Ability to ensure equipment is properly maintained and shop is kept in a clean, organized, and safe state
- Ability to order tooling, shop supplies, and consumables as needed to support machine shop operations
- Ability to serve as a senior technical resource for complex machining, prototype fabrication, tooling, fixture, and quick-turn engineering support requests
- Ability to mentor less experienced machinists or shop users on safe equipment operation, machining best practices, setup techniques, and inspection methods
- Ability to support continuous improvement efforts
