Job Summary
Senior Investigative Reporter to help identify and explore previously underreported issues in federal policy and oversight. Responsibilities include cultivating sources, identifying prospective investigations, conducting preliminary investigations using tips, FOIA, government databases, and interviews with impacted communities; developing and executing investigative plans; managing projects and mentoring junior staff; authoring accurate, concise, and balanced reporting for POGO’s website and other publications; presenting findings to policy teams; engaging in press pitches, media appearances, and potential congressional testimony; and assisting in funding proposals. Qualifications emphasize eight years of investigative/journalistic experience, independent and collaborative work, strong editorial judgment, excellent interviewing skills, policy knowledge, and the ability to work under tight deadlines in a nonpartisan, diverse environment.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of eight years of experience as an investigator, journalist or demonstrated equivalent experience
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with well-developed time and project management skills
- Excellent interpersonal and interview skills, and the ability to work effectively with colleagues, media organizations, and government officials and employees
- Demonstrable track record of taking initiative to solve problems and adapt to changing circumstances
- Strong research skills, including the ability to effectively use government and other open-data sources
- Familiarity with federal government policy, structure, and operations preferred
