On-siteCambridge, Massachusetts, United States

Full TimeSenior LevelMediumLife Sciences and Sustainability

Job Summary

Lead the design, fabrication, and optimization of MEMS-based sensor components and microscale structures from concept through manufacturable processes. Develop and optimize cleanroom process flows including photolithography, thin-film deposition, dry and wet etching, and wafer bonding. Design masks and layouts, characterize microstructures using metrology tools, and perform failure analysis to improve yield. Collaborate with electrical, systems, and bioengineering teams to integrate sensors with PCB, packaging, and fluidic solutions. Support process transfer to external foundries and maintain thorough documentation. Contribute to intellectual property development and stay current with advancements in nanoscale device engineering.

Required Qualifications

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Applied Physics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in MEMS fabrication or micro/nanofabrication in industry or advanced research environments
  • Demonstrated expertise in cleanroom processes including photolithography, thin-film deposition, and etching techniques (RIE/DRIE preferred)
  • Experience designing microstructures and mask layouts using CAD tools (e.g., L-Edit, KLayout, or similar)
  • Strong understanding of MEMS device physics and materials selection
  • Experience with wafer-level processing and packaging considerations
  • Hands-on experience with microfabrication characterization and metrology tools
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to iterate quickly in a fast-paced R&D environment
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • This is an on-site position requiring regular cleanroom and lab work

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience integrating microfabricated devices with fluidic, chemical, or biological systems
  • Experience developing MEMS-based sensing devices (mechanical, optical, electrical, or fluidic)
  • Familiarity with microfluidics or bio-integrated MEMS devices
  • Experience with wafer bonding, surface functionalization, or nanostructure fabrication
  • Prior experience working with external semiconductor foundries
  • Experience in early-stage or startup environments
