Senior Firmware Engineer
HybridGlasgow, Scotland, United Kingdom or Maryhill, Otago, New Zealand
Job Summary
Architect, develop, and maintain embedded firmware for robotic modules, pumps, valves, and sensors, driving code from architecture through production. Own subsystems end-to-end, including requirements, design, bring-up, validation, and testing, while partnering with electronics and platform-software engineers on hardware interfaces and higher-level control. Enforce robust real-time behavior, code review, and CI for embedded systems, and mentor junior engineers to establish team standards. Leverage deep STM32 experience with microcontrollers, motion control, and communication buses like CAN and SPI to ensure reliable physical motion in real-world chemistry experiments.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years developing embedded/firmware for electromechanical or robotic systems, including production-grade work
- Strong C/C++
- Solid embedded fundamentals
- Deep understanding of microcontrollers
- Deep understanding of real-time behaviour
- Deep understanding of interrupts
- Deep understanding of timers
- Deep understanding of communication buses (I2C, SPI, UART, CAN)
- Hands-on bring-up and debugging across the firmware/hardware boundary (oscilloscope, logic analyser), with a methodical approach to root cause
- STM32 experience
- Experience owning firmware subsystems end to end
- Experience lifting the people around you
Desired Qualifications
- Python for tooling/test
- Motion control, closed-loop control, or RTOS experience
- Familiarity with hardware design and reading schematics
- Close collaboration with electronics engineers
- Exposure to robotics, lab instrumentation, or other precision electromechanical systems
