Senior Fiber Optic Technician (OSP)

Job Summary
Install, prepare, splice, terminate, and maintain single-mode and multi-mode fiber optic cable in industrial and oil sands environments. Perform fusion splicing for new installations, repairs, and system upgrades while conducting end-to-end fiber optic builds including documentation and final verification. Execute fiber optic testing, certification, and troubleshooting using EXFO OTDRs, Power Meters, and IOLM to diagnose and repair faults within communication systems. Read telecommunications drawings and splice diagrams to ensure completed installations meet client specifications and industry standards. Mentor apprentices and maintain professional relationships with clients and project stakeholders while adhering to all safety policies. Work Wednesday through Sunday, 10 hours per day, with flexibility required to support project needs.
Required Qualifications
- 5-10 years of hands-on experience installing, splicing, testing, troubleshooting, and maintaining outside plant (OSP) fiber optic networks
- Previous experience working in industrial, mining, oil sands, or heavy industrial environments
- Demonstrated experience preparing fiber for fusion splicing and completing high-quality fiber optic terminations
- Proficient in the use of fusion splicers and EXFO fiber optic testing equipment, including OTDRs, Power Meters, IOLM, and FastReporter software
- Strong ability to read and interpret telecommunications drawings, splice diagrams, and technical documentation
- Legally authorized to work in Canada at the time of application
- Full, valid, and current driver's license
- Clean 5-year driver's abstract
- Clear Criminal Background Check
- Successful completion of a Pre-Access Drug & Alcohol test, with ongoing random testing as required by clients
- Must be able to safely lift, carry, and maneuver equipment and materials weighing up to 50 lbs
- Must be able to perform physically demanding field work, including prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, and working in awkward positions
- Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Must be able to safely perform work in industrial environments
- Must be able to operate hand and power tools
- Must be able to complete detailed fiber optic preparation, splicing, and testing tasks requiring strong hand dexterity and attention to detail
- Must be able to work in a variety of industrial, oil sands, and outside plant (OSP) environments, including both indoor and outdoor work locations
- Must be able to be exposed to changing weather conditions, uneven terrain, noise, dust, and other industrial site conditions
- Must be able to work around active equipment, construction activities, and other potential workplace hazards while following all company and client safety procedures
- Must be able to work flexible schedules based on project requirements
- Must be able to travel to various project locations
- Must be able to work Wednesday - Sunday / 10 hours per day
- Must reside in Fort McMurray or be willing to relocate

- BICSI Certification
- TE Connectivity Fiber Optic Certification or Training
- NAIT Fiber Optic Training or other recognized fiber optic specialization
- Experience mentoring apprentices or leading small field crews
