Job Summary
Lead CB's engineering function within the CB team, defining engineering standards and owning the roadmap for shared infrastructure, tools, and components used across CB's research projects. Line-manage a small number of engineers (1–3 reports as the team grows). Architect and deliver the core platform enabling researchers to run experiments and ship results quickly (including LLM-based agent systems and evaluation frameworks). Collaborate with researchers to translate varied requirements into well-engineered, maintainable systems; hire and grow the team; shape engineering culture; coordinate with Core Technology and other teams to avoid duplication. This role emphasizes delivering reliable systems, setting technical direction, and aligning engineering work with policy-relevant AI security research goals. Skills sought include production-level Python, cloud (AWS), Kubernetes, job scheduling, OpenAI/OpenAI-compatible APIs, PyTorch, and experience supporting research-scale infrastructure with strong communication within a multidisciplinary team.
Required Qualifications
- Significant experience writing production-level Python code that is scalable and maintainable
- Strong infrastructure and platform skills (AWS, Kubernetes, Slurm or similar)
- Experience leading or managing engineers (line management or tech-leading) or willingness to grow into those roles
- Familiarity with AI/ML ecosystem: OpenAI-compatible APIs, PyTorch, tooling around LLM-based systems
- Ability to work across multiple teams and translate research needs into engineering solutions
- Strong communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment
- Desirable: experience in research environments, familiarity with computational biology tools, internal developer platforms, CI/CD systems, and cross-team collaboration
