Job Summary
Senior Engineer in Nordstrom's Store Experience Technology group responsible for designing, building, and operating distributed systems that process sales transactions and in-store data for asset protection and fraud detection. Own end-to-end development from design with product partners to shipping production-grade Java/Spring Boot services, mentoring peers, and advancing cloud-native, event-driven architecture. Emphasizes clean, well-tested code, robust testing practices, production instrumentation, DevOps ownership (monitoring, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure), and collaboration with engineers, product managers, business stakeholders, and vendors to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions.
Required Qualifications
- 4+ years of professional software development experience
- Strong proficiency in Java and the Spring Boot framework
- Experience with RESTful microservices and tools (Postman, curl, OpenAPI/Swagger)
- Experience with a major public cloud (AWS or GCP) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Experience with event streaming and messaging (Kafka, Confluent, SQS)
- Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD tooling (GitLab CI/CD, Terraform)
- Familiarity with observability tools (New Relic, Splunk, Grafana) and instrumenting code for production
- Solid testing discipline across unit, integration, regression, and load testing
- Experience with relational and/or NoSQL data stores
- Track record of leading design of complex systems with clear technical specs
- Strong written and verbal communication; collaborative teamwork
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Nice to have: experience with POS systems or retail technology, security/fraud domains
