Senior Electrical Engineer (Substation)

Job Summary

Interpret, organize, and execute large substation engineering assignments with responsibility for budget, schedule, quality, and inter-discipline coordination. Prepare substation layouts, one-line diagrams, schematics, and technical specifications while specifying equipment such as transformers, breakers, and switchgear. Perform power system studies including load flow and short circuit analyses to support design decisions. Coordinate designs for steel structures, foundations, grounding grids, and conduit systems, then stamp and seal drawings as the professional in responsible charge. Provide design support during construction, respond to RFIs, and review vendor drawings for QA/QC. Ensure adherence to IEEE, ANSI, NESC, and utility standards while collaborating with project managers, contractors, and AHJs. Integrate SCADA systems and protective relaying into designs, leveraging AI tools for productivity.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program
  • PE license
  • EIT
  • Twelve (12)+ years of related practical experience in substation design and engineering
  • Demonstrated knowledge in: HV (>115 kV)/MV substation/switchgear design and substation yard layout
  • Demonstrated knowledge in: utility coordination
  • Demonstrated knowledge in: LV (480V/400V) plant power distribution interfaces
  • Demonstrated knowledge in: on-site generation (stand-by, prime, co-gen, renewables) and UPS systems
  • Proficiency with design and analysis tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP or similar power system analysis software
  • Proficiency with protection relay settings/configuration
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines
  • Valid driver's license
  • Maintains continuing professional education as required by registered states

Desired Qualifications

  • PE license preferred
  • Experience in lieu of professional license may be considered at SSOE's discretion
  • Experience with SCADA integration
  • Experience with arc-flash studies
  • Experience with protective device coordination for substations
  • Prior experience reviewing vendor drawings
  • Prior experience performing QA/QC
  • Prior experience providing field/commissioning support

Additional Requirements

  • Travel required for site visits and commissioning activities.
  • Valid driver’s license required (may be waived for international assignments).
  • Maintains continuing professional education as required by registered states (voluntary or mandatory).
