Job Summary
Senior Economist role in Expedia Group's Economics and Experimentation Science team to drive causal inference and marketplace optimization at scale. Build scalable econometric models (panel data methods, DiD, RDD, IV) to measure elasticity, supplier behavior changes, and customer lifetime value amid endogeneity and platform dynamics. Establish the technical roadmap for long-term impact measurement beyond short-term metrics; design and execute causal measurement frameworks (geo experiments, DiD, synthetic controls, IV) to isolate true product effects. Partner with ML teams to integrate causal inference into production systems influencing ranking, pricing, and recommendations. Translate econometric findings into clear executive narratives, mentor data scientists and economists, and influence multi-million-dollar product decisions. Requires PhD in a quantitative field, 8+ years of experience, strong econometric toolkit, Python/R and SQL proficiency, and demonstrated ability to ship analysis to production.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Economics, Applied Economics, Econometrics, Statistics, or a related quantitative field
- 8+ years of relevant professional experience
- Solid foundation in microeconomic theory and applied econometrics
- Demonstrated experience applying econometric methods to real-world business problems in tech, e-commerce, or marketplace environments
- Deep expertise in causal inference toolkit: IV, DiD, RDD, synthetic controls, panel data methods, experimental design, metalearners, doubleML, causal forests
- Proficiency in Python or R with strong SQL skills
- Track record of influencing product strategy or business decisions through rigorous quantitative analysis
- Excellent communication skills
