Job Summary
Senior Director, Finance at UpStart responsible for owning and directing the organization’s financial reporting, month-end close, audit process, grant tracking, GAAP compliance, and financial controls. Oversees an outsourced accounting firm, manages the annual audit, Form 990 preparation, and coordination with the CEO and Finance Committee. Leads budgeting, cash flow forecasting, fund tracking across multiple sponsored projects, and the design of internal controls. Partners with leadership on strategic financial planning, vendor management, and implementation of finance technology, including AI-powered workflow improvements. Travel up to 3 times per year. Strong emphasis on nonprofit/fiscal sponsorship knowledge, multi-fund accounting, and board/committee reporting; minimum 7+ years of finance/accounting experience with 3+ years in a senior role; CPA/MBA or equivalent credentials preferred.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years of progressively responsible finance or accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a senior role with direct audit and close ownership
- Deep working knowledge of ASC 958: expert in net asset classification, donor restrictions, release from restriction, functional expense allocation
- Hands-on audit experience: led or co-led an annual audit, managed auditor relationships, remediated findings, prepared PBC schedules
- Vendor management: experience managing external accounting or bookkeeping vendors to quality and timeline standards
- Multi-fund accounting experience: proficient in multi-entity or multi-fund environments
- Familiarity with fiscal sponsorship structures: understanding of fund isolation, pass-through revenue, admin fees, and separation between sponsored projects and sponsor’s financials
- Working proficiency in QuickBooks Online (QBO): navigate chart of accounts, run/interpet standard reports
- Commitment to leading through a lens of community and belonging
- Adaptability and agility in the face of change
- Passion for UpStart’s mission and guiding principles regarding client and program partnerships
- CPA, MBA, or equivalent credential (strongly preferred)
- Experience supporting a Finance Committee or board-level reporting
- Exposure to AI-powered finance workflow tools or interest in deploying them
