Job Summary
Senior Designer for Workman Kids focused on creating standout covers and full interior layouts for a range of children’s nonfiction trade and curriculum books (board books, novelty, middle grade, graphic novels, activity books, and workbooks). You’ll develop brands and logos, partner with editors, art directors, illustrators, and production teams to manage multiple book projects from concept to print, oversee freelance illustrators and designers, prepare cover mechanicals and galley covers, and collaborate with marketing to produce promotional materials including social assets. The role requires a 5-7 year design background in book publishing, a strong design portfolio, and proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat, plus prepress experience and a PDF workflow. Candidates should have strong typography/color sensibilities, excellent communication, and the ability to work quickly and independently to meet deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- 5-7 years design experience in book publishing
- Strong portfolio demonstrating design, typography, and color, as well as conceptual storytelling
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, collaboration with editors, art directors, and production teams
- Experience in developing and designing series branding
- Proficiency in InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat
- Experience with prepress production, preparing files for 4-color printing using a PDF workflow
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work quickly and independently to meet deadlines
