Job Summary
Senior Counsel, Marketing provides legal advice and support on commercial contracts, marketing initiatives, and retail banking marketing matters within a hybrid work arrangement (1-3 days on-site per week). Responsibilities include negotiating and drafting agreements with suppliers, partners, and agencies; advising on consumer protection, Bank Act, and Advertising Standards; guiding marketing campaigns while addressing legal, regulatory, and reputational risk; staying current on relevant laws and regulations; and collaborating with the Legal Department to support business initiatives and provide practical guidance to internal partners. Requires Bar admission in Ontario and a track record of sound legal judgment in advertising and marketing within a regulated environment.
Required Qualifications
- Called to the Bar in Ontario and a member in good standing
- Experience in financial industry or other highly regulated industry
- Knowledge of advertising and marketing law in Canada, Bank Act, consumer protection laws
- Ability to provide practical legal advice and risk assessment
- Experience drafting, negotiating, and advising on commercial contracts and third-party agreements
- Strong independent judgment and communication skills
- Ability to collaborate across business units and interact with senior executives
- Fluent in applying legal standards to marketing and advertising initiatives
- Experience supporting retail banking, marketing, cards, or consumer-facing products (asset)
- Familiarity with trademarks and contest law is a plus
- Hybrid work arrangement with on-site 1-3 days per week
