Job Summary

Senior Control Engineer responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining Hardware-in-the-Loop test environments for PCS and inverter control validation. Build real-time PCS simulation models (grid models, filters, transformers, battery models, protection interfaces) to validate control firmware and system behavior under normal and abnormal conditions. Execute grid-code–compliant test cases prior to certification testing, support grid-code compliance activities with documented results and traceability, and expand the HIL platform to cover additional equipment. Develop automated HIL test scripts and regression test suites, integrate HIL testing into development workflows, debug complex control issues using real-time waveforms and logs, maintain documentation for HIL architectures and validation reports, and mentor junior engineers while supporting product lifecycle and field issue resolution. Must have strong experience with MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, real-time HIL platforms (OPAL-RT, Typhoon HIL, dSPACE, RTDS), and a solid background in power converters and energy storage systems, plus familiarity with IEC/UL/IEEE standards and common communication protocols (CAN, Ethernet, SPI, UART, Modbus). This role is based in Canada (Kitchener, Ontario) with onsite work and requires travel.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related discipline
  • 5+ years of professional experience in HIL testing, real-time simulation, or PCS/inverter validation
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD or model-based design workflows
  • Experience developing automated regression frameworks for inverter validation
  • Experience supporting product development subject to IEC/UL/IEEE grid-interconnection standards
  • Hands-on experience with cross-functional firmware, controls, and hardware teams
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and technical communication skills
  • Domestic and international travel ability
  • Experience with real-time HIL simulation platforms (OPAL-RT, Typhoon HIL, dSPACE, RTDS)
  • Experience building real-time models for inverters, batteries, power systems and protection systems
  • Familiarity with CAN, Ethernet, SPI, UART, Modbus, and proprietary interfaces
  • Experience with test automation, scripting, or model-based validation workflows
  • Version control familiarity (GitHub/Bitbucket)
  • Structured validation processes
  • Engineering fundamentals in power electronics and control systems
