Job Summary

Edit cross-organizational content including technical reports, media releases, and op-eds while enforcing style guidelines to ensure consistent brand voice. Coach staff to improve internal writing quality and produce hallmark content like the Science Matters program to position the organization on environmental and social justice issues. Support the Executive Director and Leadership team by ghostwriting speeches, managing media inquiries, and co-developing crisis communications to mitigate reputational risk. Monitor media landscapes for emerging opportunities and escalate critical items to management. Manage the internal Communications Framework, including community moderation protocols and the Foundation's ISBN Canada account.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience as a Senior Communications Specialist, Editorial and Executive
  • Ability to master the Foundation's strategic position, voice, and values within Canada's socio-political landscape
  • Ability to translate complex strategies into authentic messages
  • Support for PR, driving engagement and protecting brand
  • Versatility in communications across all mediums
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills
  • Ability to produce inspiring, actionable content
  • Ability to carry out executive and brand communications to high standards
  • Strong representation across all DSF channels (web, email, social, media relations) with measurable results
  • Ability to enforce style guidelines
  • Ability to edit and review cross-organizational content including technical reports, media releases, briefing notes, letters, articles, op-eds, and digital content
  • Ability to coach staff to improve internal writing quality and capacity
  • Ability to support brand messaging and narrative development aligned with organizational strategy
  • Ability to identify, refine, test, and embed key messages across all DSF content
  • Ability to produce hallmark content such as the Science Matters program
  • Ability to position the organization on environmental/social justice issues and promote key narratives
  • Ability to monitor media for opportunities and risks
  • Ability to counsel individuals and teams
  • Ability to draft high-quality media releases, editorials, emails, briefings, web/social content, and ad copy
  • Ability to collaborate with Digital and Engagement teams to optimize for all channels
  • Ability to develop public-facing responses to support front-line staff
  • Ability to support the Executive Director and Leadership team with social media strategy, messaging, speechwriting, and internal communications
  • Ability to edit job postings, presentations, intranet content, policies, memos, and announcements
  • Ability to ghostwrite or edit speeches, articles, presentations, and memos for the Executive Director and Leadership team
  • Ability to ensure authentic alignment with organizational strategy in executive communications
  • Ability to pitch news stories/op-eds
  • Ability to cultivate journalist relationships and manage media inquiries/speaking opportunities
  • Ability to boost Executive/Leadership visibility
  • Ability to support the Executive Director's social media strategy and content
  • Ability to monitor media for emerging risks/opportunities
  • Ability to escalate critical items to management and leadership
  • Ability to co-develop executive communications with leadership to navigate crises, mitigate reputational risk, and shape public response
  • Ability to manage the development, implementation, and maintenance of the internal Communications Framework
  • Ability to build internal capacity by managing communications briefs/templates
  • Ability to help managers embed best practices into org-wide processes and training
  • Ability to implement community moderation protocols
  • Ability to draft responses to social media comments
  • Ability to monitor sentiment and share trends and insights with the team
  • Ability to inform strategy with shared insights
  • Ability to manage the Foundation's ISBN Canada account
  • Ability to assign IDs to eligible publications
  • Hybrid work arrangement (combination of remote work and 1 day per week in-office)
  • Proximity to one of the three offices (Vancouver, Montreal, or Toronto) is preferred
  • Ability to move to 2 days per week in-office eventually
  • Unionized role acceptance

  • Knowledge of Indigenous leadership and the rights, title, and sovereignty of Indigenous nations
