Job Summary
Senior Claims Specialist in the Law Division within the NYC Comptroller’s Office. Responsible for handling non-tort and more complex claims against the City of New York, conducting full investigations, reviewing records, analyzing liability and damages, preparing settlement recommendations, and approving/disallowing settlements within authorized monetary levels. Will coordinate with City agencies (Education, Law) and pro se claimants, maintain detailed claims files, and manage caseloads with attention to statutory timelines. Requires evaluating settlement authority requests, expediting claims related to special education, and performing related projects. Education/experience options include a bachelor’s degree or associate degree with relevant experience, or a high school diploma with substantial relevant experience, or an equivalent combination. Emphasizes collaboration with auditing, fiscal services, and imaging facilities, and adherence to equal opportunity employment principles.
Required Qualifications
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; or
- An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college or university and two years of full-time satisfactory experience investigating and/or settling claims for personal injury or property damage or loss; or
- A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State's Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of full-time satisfactory experience investigating and/or settling claims for personal injury or property damage or loss; or
- A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience that is equivalent to the above options.

- Current City of New York employees with a permanent Civil Service title of Claims Specialist only.
