Job Summary
Senior Aquarist (Benthic Team) at Monterey Bay Aquarium leads and performs daily husbandry for fish, invertebrates, and herptile collections, monitors water quality, maintains exhibits and infrastructure, documents animal health and welfare, and plans field collections. The role serves as informal team lead for gallery-based lives exhibits, develops innovative animal care techniques, ensures adherence to AZA accreditation standards, and provides backup leadership in the absence of onsite managers. Responsibilities include SCUBA-diving to perform exhibit maintenance, leading plant and animal field collections, supervising volunteers, maintaining animal health records, and collaborating with internal teams to improve husbandry practices. Preferred KSAs include a Bachelor's degree in biology or related field with at least 3 years of aquarist experience, strong knowledge of marine species, water quality chemistry, life support systems, disease management, experience with Tracks and MS Office, and strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Biology or related field or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- A minimum of 3 years of experience as an Aquarist II or equivalent
- SCUBA certification desirable; ability to pass an occupational dive physical desirable
- Experience working with and supervising volunteers
- Proficiency with Tracks animal database system or similar animal records database
