Job Summary
Manage and reconcile bank and balance sheet accounts, record journal entries, accruals, and cost allocations, and prepare financial reports including unrestricted vs. restricted spending analysis. Support the month-end close process, lease accounting under ASC 842, and annual financial audits by collecting documents and preparing schedules. Generate invoices for partner organizations, monitor capital expenditures, and assist with salary and project allocations for global staff. Help develop new procedures to improve accuracy and efficiency while ensuring appropriate account coding for project expenditures. This hybrid role requires two days in the downtown Chicago office and supports a global non-profit equipping families to build sustainable livelihoods.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- 4-6 years of accounting experience
- Public accounting audit experience
- Previous experience with an ERP system
- Strong organizational skills & attention to detail
- Excellent understanding of processes
- Good interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills
- Ability to act and operate independently with minimal daily direction
- Ability to work well under the pressure of deadlines
- Ability to independently prioritize in a fast-paced environment
- Proficient in Microsoft Office with intermediate to advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills
- Written and verbal fluency in English
- Fluency in French or Spanish
- This is a hybrid position with 2 days required in downtown Chicago office
- All bank accounts must be reconciled every month
- Other balance sheet accounts are to be reconciled no less than quarterly
- Manage and record the lease accounting according to ASC 842
- Record journal entries, accruals, and cost allocations
- Maintain accounts receivables
- Monitor capital expenditures, record acquisition, disposal, and depreciation entries
- Maintain the fixed asset schedule
- Work with the Program Management Unit to ensure appropriate account and project coding
- Prepare financial reports and schedules, including the unrestricted vs. restricted spending analysis
- Support restricted donor fund and project management processes
- Assist in the annual financial audit by collecting and reviewing requested documents and preparing necessary schedules and reports
- Help develop and implement new procedures and process improvements to meet operational needs and improve accuracy and efficiency
Desired Qualifications
- CPA
- preferably at a non-profit organization
- Experience with an ERP system, preferably using fund accounting
- Experience with accounting and donor management software (Financial Edge) (Raiser's Edge)
- An understanding of and a commitment to advancing the mission and values of Opportunity International
- fluency in French or Spanish
