Security Professional - Fulltime Shelter Officer

Job Summary
Control and monitor access to the facility by verifying identification, managing entry logs, and ensuring only authorized individuals enter. Respond to behavioral incidents involving residents or visitors using verbal de-escalation techniques and trauma-informed approaches while maintaining calm, professional conduct in high-stress situations. Conduct routine patrols of the interior and exterior to identify safety hazards, suspicious behavior, or policy violations, and secure doors, exits, and restricted areas. Respond to medical, fire, security, or behavioral emergencies and assist staff during evacuations or critical incidents by following site-specific protocols. Complete detailed and accurate incident reports and communicate effectively with supervisors, shelter staff, and emergency services. Work closely with shelter staff to support daily operations, provide security support during resident interactions, intakes, and high-risk situations. This role requires a valid Ontario Security Guard License, First Aid & CPR Certification, and prior experience working with vulnerable populations in a shelter or similar high-interaction environment.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1–2 years of security experience in a shelter, supportive housing, or similar environment
- Proven experience working with vulnerable populations
- Must have good written and oral communication skills
- Strong verbal de-escalation and conflict-resolution skills
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and make sound decisions under pressure
- Excellent observation skills
- Ability to maintain professionalism, empathy, and authority simultaneously
- Valid Ontario Security Guard License
- First Aid & CPR Certification
- Must be 18 years of age or older
- High School Diploma or GED (or equivalent work experience)
- Legally eligible to work in Canada (up to 40 hours per week)
- Must successfully complete a background check, which may include criminal history, employment verification, education verification, and reference checks
