Job Summary

Patrol library buildings and grounds at regular intervals, addressing irregularities and preventing theft of property while greeting customers and answering directional questions. Use de-escalation techniques to confront disruptive behavior, investigate safety hazards and security incidents, and respond to emergencies including reviewing CCTV footage. Ensure building security at closing by completing daily checklists, assisting physically challenged customers, and rendering first aid during medical emergencies. Collaborate with law enforcement on public safety issues, file police reports, and participate in emergency response drills. Maintain professional appearance and carry necessary equipment while documenting incidents in reporting software and bringing significant risks to management. Serve as on-call officer or fill in as dispatcher as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • 1-3 years of relevant customer service or security experience or training
  • Ability to utilize reliable transportation to promptly report to job assignment and other locations, per job requirements
  • Valid driver license
  • Access to a personal vehicle to promptly report to varied work locations as assigned
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to carry and use Oleoresin Capsicum (OC or pepper spray) upon receiving necessary training and in appropriate situations
  • Ability to respond quickly, effectively, and appropriately when it is clear that the physical safety of staff and/or customers is endangered
  • Ability to actively patrol (on foot) and use stairs throughout the duration of their shift and to quickly respond to incidents
  • Ability to operate library technology including personal computer, email, software programs (i.e., Windows/Microsoft Office) and other job-related equipment and systems
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings
  • Willing to carry a cellular telephone as directed by management for response to library emergencies and service requests
  • Work schedule includes rotational on-call duties
  • Must have the ability to actively patrol (on foot) and use stairs throughout the duration of their shift and to quickly respond to incidents
  • Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force
  • Ability to exert up to 20 lbs. of force
  • Ability to sprint short distances
  • Ability to quickly ascend and descend stairs
  • Ability to perform CPR
  • Ability to exert in excess of 50 lbs. of force
