Job Summary

Provide direct support to a student with deaf-blindness during all or part of a school day as part of an educational team, adhering to the student's IEP and modifications recommended by related services staff. Assist with teacher-planned activities, exercises, drills, and self-care tasks such as feeding, dressing, and toileting. Implement therapy programs requiring lifting and positioning, carry out behavior interventions, and maintain student records, communication, and daily logs. Visit or provide instruction in the student's home as deemed appropriate by the IEP. Participate in site-based, regional, and statewide training in the area of deaf blindness and attend professional meetings as required. Maintain emotional control under stress and ensure confidentiality while following federal, state, and local policies.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Paraprofessional Aide certification from state of Texas
  • Ability to work with children with disabilities
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively
  • Knowledge of general office equipment
  • Ability to physically manage students with motor and/or behavioral difficulties
  • Certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention
  • Must be willing to participate in ongoing training in the area of deaf blindness
  • Must have the ability to lift and carry 50 pounds or more
  • Must have the ability to control behavior through physical restraint
  • Must have the ability to assist non-ambulatory students
  • Able to maintain confidentiality
