Job Summary
The Meat Cutter promptly stocks and maintains meat and seafood cases, faces and prices products, and assists customers while maintaining a clean, safe department. Responsibilities include receiving/tracking shipments, ensuring correct temperatures and dating, cutting, wrapping, and labeling meat and seafood products, operating equipment (knives, scales, wrappers, pallet jacks), maintaining rotation and proper storage, and upholding health and safety standards. The role requires high attention to detail, strong customer service, ability to work in a fast-paced grocery environment, and capability to work varied hours. Knowledge of weights and measures, packaging, COOL compliance, and adherence to department procedures are essential; prior grocery/meat experience and related apprenticeship are preferred.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalency
- Minimum 2 years professional experience in meat/retail environment
- Preferred 2-3 years grocery retail experience in Meat department
- Knowledge of weights, measures, and scales
- Ability to operate knives, scales, wrappers, pallet jacks, hand trucks
- Understanding of proper dating procedures and packaging
- Ability to maintain safety, cleanliness, and organization in meat department
- Knowledge of COOL compliance for seafood products; awareness of product origins
- Excellent customer service and cross-selling skills
- Flexibility to work varied hours/days
- Health Department guidelines familiarity
- Experience with inventory and tagging accuracy
- Journeyman cutter or apprenticeship program preferred
