Sculpture Studio Technician

Job Summary

Coordinate sculpture studio operations, including instruction support, safety training, and compliance for specialized equipment such as kilns and power tools. Supervise student employees and manage the purchase and tracking of supplies and materials. Maintain hot and cold glass, wood, and metal fabrication processes, including lost wax casting and 3D printing. Apply principles of hazardous material handling and inventory management to ensure safe storage and disposal. Provide technical guidance to students for equipment safety. Work nine months annually from September to May, part-time at 30 hours per week.

Required Qualifications

  • BA/BFA Degree in Art or related field (previous experience performing the duties of the job may substitute for a college degree)
  • Familiarity with hot and cold glass working processes and equipment
  • Familiarity with wood fabrication and carving tools
  • Familiarity with metal shop processes and equipment
  • Familiarity with lost wax and sand-casting processes
  • Familiarity with 3D printing
  • Working knowledge of budget and inventory management software and procedures, or evidence of ability to develop such knowledge
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Knowledge of principles, procedures, and standards for the receipt, safe handling, storage, shipment, and disposal of hazardous chemicals and materials
  • Experience and skill to provide technical guidance and leadership to students so as to ensure safe use of equipment and materials
  • Ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds, stand for long periods of time, and climb ladders

  • Experience as sculpture studio technician
  • Expertise in hot and cold glass working processes and equipment
  • Experience with iron forging/metalsmithing
  • Some experience in teaching and/or providing workshops
  • Experience supervising student employees
