Job Summary
Scrap Buyer II at Gerdau is responsible for the cost-effective procurement of retail scrap used in steelmaking. You will establish and maintain supplier relations, solicit new supply sources (including scrap metal generators), procure scrap within established policies and contracts, review invoices and vendor performance, and act as a liaison between yard personnel and scrap suppliers. The role requires staying abreast of market trends, understanding regional scrap markets, and communicating specifications, terms, and safety/environmental requirements to vendors and shippers. You will work both independently and as part of a cross-functional team, leveraging procurement systems to manage orders and resolve issues, with regular weekly travel to various locations.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 2-3 years of relevant experience with 1 year directly related to buying and selling scrap
- Knowledge of sources and grades of raw materials and some knowledge of transportation issues and scrap yard operations
- Strong negotiating, communication, math and problem-solving skills
- Ability to initiate business and work independently and in cross-functional teams
- High ethical standards and strong work ethic
- Willingness for regular weekly travel to maintain vendor network and meet procurement objectives
