Job Summary
Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot a low-temperature scanning NV magnetometry system and related instruments, including high vacuum systems, cryogenic cooling, scanning probe equipment (AFM/STM), confocal microscope, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and vibrating-sample magnetometer (VSM). Support faculty, students, and staff in quantum sensing, magnetism, and materials science research; perform setup, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting to ensure high sensitivity and resolution. Manage cryogenic equipment and high/ultra-high vacuum infrastructure; ensure safety in handling cryogens and high-powered lasers; provide training and technical support to researchers; document equipment maintenance and data acquisition; assist in data analysis and interpretation; coordinate service for complex repairs with contract specialists and arrange off-site calibration as needed. Qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering, or materials science; experience with AFM/STM; cryogenic systems and high vacuum (UHV a plus); familiarity with XRD and VSM; strong problem-solving and communication skills; ability to lift up to 50 lb; valid driver’s license; ability to work in an academic lab environment. Schedule: full-time, 35 hours per week, year-round.
