Job Summary

Assess and treat illness, manage chronic conditions, and provide emergency care for students and staff. Administer medications, treatments, and immunizations while maintaining accurate health records and ensuring all screenings are up-to-date. Develop individualized health care plans, emergency action plans, and evacuation protocols for school and school-sponsored activities. Serve as a liaison between home, school, and community resources by attending health-related meetings and collaborating with the school team. Educate students and families, train school staff, and act as a health resource for inquiries. Prepare and submit MA DPH reports, review emergency response plans, run drills, and maintain emergency equipment. Work with the school physician and provide support and referral resources for children and their families. Complete mandated health screenings including vision, hearing, height, weight, postural, and SBIRT.

Required Qualifications

  • Valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
  • A Bachelor's degree in nursing
  • Certified by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a school nurse or able to meet the requirements for licensure
  • Two years experience in child health, community health, or other relevant clinical nursing settings
  • Certification in American Heart Association or Red Cross CPR/AED
  • Ability to provide emergency care/assessment
  • Knowledge of professional and legal requirements
  • Human relations skills
  • Organizational/administrative skills
  • Knowledge of child growth and development
  • Ability to effectively use local resources
  • Techniques in health counseling/guidance
  • Ability to deliver student/staff/parent presentations
  • Strong district lens regarding EL, curriculum, and equity
  • Knowledge of current education legislation/regulations
  • Ability to work effectively with teachers, support staff, and parents and advocate for children in order to effectively problem solve
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills and ability to work with all stakeholders
  • Basic computer skills including data entry and word-processing
  • Ability to complete a pre-employment physical, including a drug test
  • Ability to pass a National fingerprint-based Criminal Background Check (NCBC)
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI)

Desired Qualifications

  • Master's degree preferred
  • Experience in an urban district/setting preferred
