Job Summary
Provide specialized social work in an educational setting to enable students to achieve optimal learning. Conduct behavioral observations, interviews, and home visits to gather background information, then select and administer age-appropriate assessments to determine student needs. Develop individual plans and Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) through interdisciplinary team meetings, while delivering specialized therapy, group counseling, and crisis intervention. Serve as a liaison between students, families, and community resources, providing referrals for housing and mental health services. Submit comprehensive assessment reports, compile monthly records, and deliver in-service training to staff. Perform court appearances and evaluations as required, adhering to local, state, and federal timelines.
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree from an accredited college or university in social work or a related field
- Licensure eligibility requirements for a School Social Worker with the Virginia Department of Education

- Ability to perform specialized social work in an educational setting to enable students to achieve optimal learning
- Ability to collect, interpret, and synthesize information regarding a student's social history, community environment, family dynamics, economic differences, and significant crises that influence academic and behavioral functioning
- Ability to work effectively with children of varying developmental stages
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to work cooperatively as an interdisciplinary team member to provide services and to devise an appropriate service plan for referred students and their families
- Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form
- Ability to write reports in clear and concise language and grammar
- Ability to be flexible in an ever-changing environment
- Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time
- Must exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone, to enter data into a computer
- Must be able to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids
- Must be able to hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone
- Must be able to speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors, and on the telephone
- Must have physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds
- Must be able to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead
