Job Summary

Teach 8 to 9 classes per academic year in journalism and sports media sequences, covering news research, reporting, and editorial production for online, magazine, and video formats. Manage involvement in the Daily Universe and Universe Lab newsrooms while mentoring students on creative works and participating in school, college, and university committees. Deliver editorial content across news and sports media using research, writing, editing, photography, videography, podcasting, and social media. Maintain a productive student-mentoring agenda and assist in assessing teaching effectiveness to accomplish program outcomes. This permanent continuing faculty position requires relocation to Utah and a terminal degree completed by the start date.

Required Qualifications

  • A terminal degree in one's field, including Ph.D., M.F.A., Ed.D., J.D., or other as appropriate according to the discipline
  • The required degree must be completed by the start date
  • A minimum of five years professional experience in news, sports media or related field
  • Relocation to and/or residence in Utah for the duration of employment
  • Current temple recommend (for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints)
  • Adherence to the university's Honor Code and Dress & Grooming Standards
  • Commitment to the Mission of Brigham Young University and the Aims of a BYU Education
  • Ability to live a life of loyalty to Jesus Christ and His restored Church and align with doctrine and teachings declared by living prophets, seers, and revelators
  • Demonstration of intentionality in building faith in Jesus Christ and testimony of His restored gospel among students and others in the BYU community
  • Teaching subject matter with the Spirit of God and striving to keep it 'bathed in the light and color of the restored gospel'
  • Excellence in teaching, scholarship, mentoring, and citizenship
  • Commitment to a campus culture of unity, love, and belonging
  • A pattern of exemplary conduct that combines spiritual values and personal integrity in conducting work in a professional manner consistent with the values espoused by the university and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
  • A pattern of public expression that faithfully promotes the mission and doctrines of the Church; is devoid of contradicting or opposing Church doctrines, policies, and general leaders; and refrains from expressions and behaviors that are dishonest, unchaste, profane, or disrespectful of others
