Job Summary
Aid students in course selection, evaluate aptitudes through standardized testing, and develop individualized educational and occupational plans. Resolve educational handicaps, prevent dropouts, and guide students in career choices while addressing personal problems related to home, health, and emotional adjustment. Maintain confidential student records, assist in college admissions, and work with teachers and therapists to improve student success. Confer with parents, advise administrators on discipline matters, and interpret school objectives to the community.
Required Qualifications
- Enrollment in an accredited school counselor preparation program
- Completion of a minimum of 24 graduate semester hours of that program
- Completion of a master's degree in addiction
- Completion of a master's degree in career
- Completion of a master's degree in clinical mental health
- Completion of a master's degree in clinical rehabilitation
- Completion of a master's degree in college counseling and student affairs
- Completion of a master's degree in marriage, couple, and family counseling
- Completion of a master's degree in rehabilitation counseling
- Enrollment in an accredited school counselor preparation program to complete additional master's level courses needed to add school counseling specialization
- Completion of remaining school counselor preparation program requirements within three years
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly
