Job Summary
School Counselor - Elementary in Nottoway County Public Schools responsible for delivering a comprehensive, data-driven counseling program aligned with ASCA Mindsets and Behaviors and the Virginia Department of Education standards. Provides individual and group guidance, assists with academic and career planning, and collaborates with students, parents, school personnel, and community agencies. Responsibilities include conducting guidance sessions, supporting SST/RTI/VTSS and 504 processes, facilitating career exploration activities, updating Academic and Career Plan Portfolios, interpreting student records and test data, and promoting school-wide counseling initiatives. Requires leadership, advocacy, and collaboration skills, knowledge of FERPA/IDEA/McKinney-Vento, and the ability to implement counseling programs within the school context, with duties performed under the principal’s supervision.
Required Qualifications
- Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement in school counseling
- Master’s Degree in School Counseling
- Experience working with students, parents, school personnel and community
- Knowledge of ASCA Model and school counseling standards
- Knowledge of FERPA, IDEA, McKinney-Vento Act, ESL and related mandates
- Ability to develop and update Academic and Career Plan Portfolios (ACPP) and to design core curriculum lessons
- Ability to conduct individual and group counseling sessions and to implement counseling programs
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
- Understanding of K-12 instruction and counseling/guidance theory
- Ability to interpret standardized testing data and support student academic and personal growth
