Job Summary
Establish the school-counseling program by developing activities and resources to implement and evaluate personal-social growth, educational planning, and career development initiatives. Provide individual and group counseling services to meet the developmental, preventive, and remedial needs of students while consulting with parents, teachers, and community personnel. Coordinate all counseling services and assist teachers with the Guidance Curriculum, including interpreting test results and assisting with student educational placements. Supervise counselor aides and clerical assistants as needed, maintain accurate records and statistics, and adhere to ethical standards and state licensing requirements.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in a related field
- Master's degree in counseling
- Equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities
- Licensure by the State of North Carolina Department of Public Instruction in counseling
- Ability to obtain licensure in counseling
- Physical ability to operate a variety of equipment including computers, typewriters, copiers, calculators, etc.
- Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, and pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body
- Ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable, functional, structural or composite characteristics of data, people or things
- Ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information
- Ability to read a variety of correspondence, reports, forms, press releases, etc.
- Ability to prepare correspondence, reports, forms, etc., using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation, grammar, diction, and style
- Ability to speak before groups of people with poise, voice control and confidence
- Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
- Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form
- Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables

- General knowledge of the ethical guidelines applicable to the position as outlined by professional organizations and/or federal, state and local laws, rules and regulations
- General knowledge of the principles of organization and administration
- General knowledge of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study
- Skill in counseling and motivating students
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and evaluate the effectiveness of student programs
- Ability to coordinate the efforts of support services personnel and outside agencies
- Ability to use common office machines and popular computer-driven word processing, spreadsheet and file maintenance programs
- Ability to maintain complete and accurate records and statistics and to develop meaningful reports from them
- Ability to effectively express ideas orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
- Proficiency in the use of the management system for the Online Program
