Job Summary
The School Bus Monitor provides on-board safety support to students during loading, riding, and unloading, assisting bus drivers and responding to emergencies. Responsibilities include monitoring student behavior and safety (ensuring seatbelts are worn), providing first aid to ill or injured students, coordinating discipline follow-ups, assisting with bus cleanliness, aiding in post-trip interior cleanup, helping with routes and directions as needed, and supporting emergency evacuation planning and drills. Requires prompt on-site presence during regular hours, heavy attention to confidentiality, and the ability to operate equipment such as wheelchair lifts while safely managing students, including those with special needs. Strong communication skills and knowledge of safe use of child restraint systems are essential.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED required
- Certified in first aid and CPR (adult and child) preferred
- 1 year of work experience as a bus monitor preferred
- Must be able to follow written and oral instructions quickly and accurately
- Must be able to handle sensitive and confidential information
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with students and adults
- Knowledge of child restraint systems used for transporting students with special needs
- Ability to safely operate a wheelchair hydraulic lift
- Ability to assist students with patience and understanding
