Job Summary
Reinforce safe work practices by identifying hazards, correcting unsafe behaviors, and ensuring proper safety training for the saw filing team. Perform precise tasks including sharpening teeth, shaping gullets, adjusting cutting widths, and leveling saws on circular saws, bandsaws, and knives. Diagnose sawing defects such as vibration and heat distortion to solve cutting performance issues and maximize equipment reliability. Establish and enforce quality control standards within the filing shop to ensure consistent lumber production. Troubleshoot, maintain, and calibrate precision saw filing machinery, including automated CNC grinders and specialized measuring instruments. Changes saws and knives in all machines while assisting maintenance in sawmill floor alignments. Requires Journeyperson Saw Filer certification, advanced knowledge of saw mechanics, and strong safety leadership skills.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced knowledge of saw mechanics, metallurgy, and the functionality of various sawmill machines (e.g., Cutoff Saws, Barkers, Canters, Head Rigs, Edgers, Trimmers, Chippers, Planers)
- Excellent analytical and troubleshooting skills to diagnose complex issues and implement effective solutions quickly
- A valid provincial or inter-provincial Journeyperson Saw Filer certification
- Proven safety leadership and strong interpersonal skills for communication, conflict management, and mentoring junior staff
- Must be able to lift heavy, awkward objects and climb on equipment
- Required use of PPE appropriate for the task and working conditions
