Job Summary
Lead the saw filing team at Vanderwell’s Alberta operations, enforcing safety practices, training, and quality standards. Perform precise filing tasks on saws (teeth, gullets, widths) for circular saws, bandsaws, and knives; diagnose vibration and heat distortion issues with mill operations to optimize performance and reliability; establish and uphold quality control within the filing shop and troubleshoot/maintain filing machinery (including CNC grinders and precision instruments). Requires advanced knowledge of saw mechanics and metallurgy, and a Journeyperson Saw filer certification; leadership and mentoring of junior staff are essential. Work is performed in a sawmill environment near Slave Lake, Alberta, with appropriate PPE and safety considerations.
Required Qualifications
- Journeyperson Saw filer certification (provincial or inter-provincial)
- Advanced knowledge of saw mechanics, metallurgy, and sawmill machine functionality (e.g., Cutoff Saws, Barkers, Canters, Head Rigs, Edgers, Trimmers, Chippers, Planers)
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Proven safety leadership and ability to mentor junior staff
- Ability to diagnose defects and maintain/adjust precision filing machinery (including automated CNC grinders)
