Job Summary
Interpret Samoan language materials for the Department of Justice LSS program, providing interpretation, translation, transcription, and related linguistic support. Responsibilities include delivering interpretation within 3 hours of government requests, handling documents and media across legal, medical, financial, and technical domains, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality, and utilizing CAT tools (notably SDL Trados Studio) to support translations. Requirements include specialized interpreter training or equivalent court/legal experience, ILR level 3 or equivalent, at least four years of interpretation experience, U.S. citizenship, ability to work in the U.S. for the last 3 of 5 years, English/Samoan fluency, and familiarity with formal, legal, diplomatic, and casual registers; active Public Trust or higher security clearance; and capacity to work remotely with potential travel to CONUS locations.
Required Qualifications
- Specialized training in the interpreting field and/or extensive experience in court or legal environments in the required language, and able to provide this service within (3) hours of request
- Minimum of four (4) years of experience in language interpretation in the mode required by the assignment
- Qualifying scores ILR 3 minimum or equivalent on language/translation tests
- Must have lived 3 of the last 5 years in the U.S. (does not have to be consecutive)
- Must have at least 1 year of experience working with a law enforcement and/or legal department
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Know both English and foreign language vocabularies used in formal, legal, diplomatic, consultative, and casual modes of communication in various contexts, including colloquial slang, idiosyncratic slang, and regionalisms
- Know specialized vocabulary (and terminology) in both English and the foreign language related to the Government’s varied roles and missions
- Speak in English and foreign language fluently, including regionalisms and colloquial slang without altering meaning
- Interpret in a manner that is factually and conceptually accurate without changes, omissions, or additions
- Preserve the tone and register of source language materials
- Abide by relevant code of linguist ethics
- Proficient in using Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tools, with a strong emphasis on SDL Trados Studio
- Clearance: Active Public Trust or higher security clearance
- Location: Remote / National Capitol Region / Various CONUS Locations
- Travel: Some travel may be required
