Job Summary

Sales Tax Specialist role managing all aspects of U.S. state and local sales and use tax compliance. Reports to CFO and works within Finance to file returns across 30+ jurisdictions, manage nexus footprint, support audits and controversy, and maintain tax automation systems. Responsibilities include compliance and reporting, nexus analysis, audit support, systems and technology management of tax software, cross-functional collaboration with Sales/Operations/Finance, and input on mergers and acquisitions from an indirect tax perspective. Requires a Bachelor’s degree and 3–5 years of hands-on U.S. sales and use tax experience; familiarity with Avalara or similar tax platforms, ERP systems, and SST rules; strong Excel and analytical skills; effective communication in a cross-functional environment. The role is hybrid and based in the New York City office.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or an equivalent qualification
  • 3–5 years of direct, hands-on U.S. sales and use tax compliance experience
  • Experience with a major tax automation platform (Avalara AvaTax, Vertex, Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE, or similar)
  • Familiarity with SST registration and compliance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, data validation)
  • Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle NetSuite, or Microsoft Dynamics desirable
  • Exposure to marketplace facilitator rules and e-commerce or SaaS taxability a plus
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Energetic, self-motivated, committed to continuous learning

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent
  • CMI (Certified Member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation) designation preferred or active pursuit
  • 3–5 years of direct, hands-on U.S. sales and use tax compliance experience
  • Experience with a major tax automation platform (Avalara, Vertex, Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE, or similar)
  • Familiarity with Streamlined Sales Tax (SST) registration and compliance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, data validation)
  • Experience with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle NetSuite, or Microsoft Dynamics desirable
  • Exposure to marketplace facilitator rules and e-commerce or SaaS taxability a plus
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to explain tax concepts to non-tax stakeholders
  • Energetic, self-motivated, and committed to continuous learning and process improvement
