Safety Specialist

Job Summary

Drive safety, security, and emergency response systems by developing guidelines, managing radio communication and gas detection equipment, and coordinating spill drills. Lead safety culture initiatives, conduct site assessments for retail locations, and ensure compliance with Maritime Transportation Security Act requirements. Build relationships with municipal fire departments, deliver training programs, and manage incident investigations while maintaining automated record-keeping systems. Support the SSEM team with continuous improvement processes and special projects across business units. This role requires proficiency in PowerPoint, strong written communication skills, and the ability to work within a 24/7 operation environment.

Required Qualifications

  • Three to Five or more years of relevant experience
  • High school diploma
  • Proven experience understanding and applying safety policies and processes, preferably within an industrial and or retail environment
  • Proven experience in multi-tasking of work projects
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and Safe Work Practices
  • Experience in developing, delivering, and supporting training programs
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in relevant field, preferred
  • Prior experience in public speaking and classroom training is required
  • Prior relevant experience in the energy and or retail or similar industries is strongly preferred
  • Willingness to commit to The Island Way (IES core values of): Kīnāʻole, Aloha, Lōkahi and Hoʻohana
  • Must pass pre-employment background check including, medical, drug and job-related physical abilities testing as required
  • Must be able to wear Personal Protective Equipment as required
  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within sixty days of hire
  • This is a safety sensitive position and random drug testing is required
  • Valid driver's license with clean abstract
  • Willingness to devote the time as needed to meet packet and task deadlines
  • Willingness to maintain or increase skills
  • Willing to support a 24/7 operation
  • Must be able to draft guidelines, processes and procedures and other written documents
  • As assigned, lead SSEM special projects across business units of IES
  • Ability to uphold to strict ethical standards: integrity, objectivity, and confidentiality of sensitive information
  • Proficient Microsoft Office Suite skills, including editing and proofreading. Must be proficient in power point
  • Ability to maintain automated and manual record keeping systems
  • Strong sense of team spirit and ability to transfer it to others
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to evaluate information and exercise good judgment in making decisions
  • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality

  • Safety and security—the individual actively promotes and personally observes safety and security procedures and uses equipment and materials properly
  • Knowledge of retail, construction, and fuel storage facilities and applicable hazards

Desired Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree from an accredited college in relevant field, preferred
  • Prior relevant experience in the energy and or retail or similar industries is strongly preferred
