Job Summary
Design, schedule, and facilitate safety training sessions on OSHA regulations for employees across all departments. Conduct regular site safety audits, inspections, and facility reviews to identify hazards, document compliance, and recommend corrective actions. Investigate employee injuries, incidents, and vehicle accidents to determine root causes and implement preventive measures. Prepare OSHA documentation, reports, and incident logs while serving as the liaison with external regulatory agencies. Coordinate fire drills, oversee annual facility inspections, and enforce safety policies aligned with legal standards. Respond to after-hours calls as needed and maintain a comprehensive safety recordkeeping system.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree
- minimum of three (3) years of experience in safety or risk management
- Valid driver's license from North Carolina or another state, with the ability to obtain a North Carolina driver's license within 30 days of hire
- Demonstrated ability to design and deliver effective training programs and presentations
- Strong knowledge of OSHA regulations, workplace safety standards, and risk management principles
- Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills
- Strong investigative skills, with the ability to analyze and interpret data trends, enforce policies, conduct Job Hazard Analyses (JHA), and apply a solid mechanical aptitude
- OSHA certification or the ability to obtain a 30-hour OSHA certification within the first six (6) months of employment
- Ability to conduct on-site safety inspections, which may involve walking, standing, bending, climbing stairs or ladders, and navigating uneven terrain
- Ability to lift, carry, and move items weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle
- Sufficient hearing and speech to communicate effectively in person, by phone, and via radio
- Sufficient vision to perform inspections, read documents, operate equipment, and drive safely
- Ability to apply sound judgment, interpret safety regulations, analyze information, and make informed decisions
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic and accurately review safety data and reports
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in written documentation, training environments, and public interactions
- Must undergo a drug screening, in accordance with the City's drug and alcohol policy
- Must undergo a background screening to determine whether there is any current, pending, or previous charge, conviction or other infraction deemed incompatible with service in the capacity for which the candidate is being hired
- Must pass a pre-placement physical exam
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in risk management and insurance, or a master's degree in a related field
- Professional designations such as Associate in Risk Management (ARM), Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or other related credentials
- Considerable knowledge of, and the ability to interpret, applicable federal and state workplace insurance regulations and OSHA standards
- Strong ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing, including presenting policies and training programs to diverse audiences
- Demonstrated ability to recommend, develop, and implement goals, policies, and procedures, and to deliver safety training that supports an effective safety program
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
- Thorough knowledge of standard office practices and procedures
- Ability to develop and maintain spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, safety policies, newsletters, and related materials
- Sound judgment in organizing work, establishing priorities, and managing assigned responsibilities
- Ability to interact effectively, tactfully, and courteously with all levels of management, employees, and the public
- Defensive Driving certification
- Experience within the public sector or public entity environment
