Job Summary
Provide instrumental music for Roman Catholic worship events at Saturday evening Masses, Sunday morning Masses, and Holy Days of Obligation, including accompaniment for rehearsals and special services such as memorials and funerals. Lead congregational singing by directing the choir and guiding assigned liturgical portions like the Psalm and Gloria. Recruit, train, and assist all choir and musician volunteers while coordinating special music with the Catholic Chaplain. Conduct weekly choir rehearsals of minimum thirty minutes, ensuring audio/visual equipment is tested and maintained before each service. Maintain familiarity with Catholic music trends and liturgical planning, submitting a monthly schedule of selections for approval at least one month in advance.
Required Qualifications
- 1099 contractor status with Music Ministry International
- Bachelor's degree in music OR minimum of five years of experience playing piano or organ in a liturgical church or Chapel setting
- Familiarity with a wide range of Catholic music to include the traditional, contemporary, and liturgical styles
- Ability to read music, teach vocal music part and harmony
- Letter of good standing from the Contractor's local parish priest stating familiarity with liturgical year, liturgy planning and Catholic music ministries (no older than 6 months)
- Ability to provide musical accompaniment for special services including Memorial services, Funeral services, combined services, faith specific holidays, and occasional support for special events
- Ability to recruit, train and assist all volunteers for the choir(s) and musicians
- Ability to provide/maintain a monthly schedule of music selections for coordination and approval by the Catholic Chaplain/officiating priest
- Ability to provide choir direction and lead congregational singing including assigned Psalm, the Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei and other sung/chanted portions of the liturgy
- Ability to coordinate all special music to be performed at each service with the Catholic Chaplain/officiating priest including solos, duets, adult choir, children's choir, guest choirs, and guest musicians
- Ability to provide weekly choir rehearsals minimum one half hour in length
- Ability to be present at least five (5) minutes before rehearsals and fifteen (15) minutes before Mass or other worship services
- Ability to ensure all audio/visual equipment are setup and tested prior to each service/rehearsal
- Ability to monitor the condition of choir equipment and advise the COR of any problems or needs
- Ability to ensure the choir area is left clean after use by removing audio/visual equipment and restoring area to original/neutral configuration/setting
- Ability to maintain familiarity with current trends and requirements in Catholic worship
- Ability to provide musical accompaniment for up to 120 yearly events in coordination with the Catholic Chaplain/presiding priest including both rehearsal and performance
