Job Summary
Drive heavy rolling machine to compact earth fills, subgrades, flexible base, and bituminous surface to grade specifications for highways, streets, and runways. Control and guide machine by moving levers, depressing pedals, turning handwheels, and pushing throttle. Drive machine in successive overlapping passes, determining speed and direction based on material compressibility and changing temperatures to prevent ridges. Push hand roller and pound surfaces using hand tamp, or guide portable power roller over areas inaccessible to road roller. Read engineering drawings, judge distances and slopes accurately, and follow safety habits in dusty or dirty surroundings.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
- Proper certification
- Appropriate training and experience
- Ability to read engineering drawing
- Ability to practice good safety habits
- Ability to work in dusty or dirty surroundings
- Ability to follow instructions and meet set standards
- Ability to judge distances and slopes accurately
- Ability to make decisions based on verifiable standards
- Ability to stoop, bend, and crouch
- Ability to use hands, arms, and legs fully
- Ability to see well (either naturally or with correction)
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Ability to frequently lift and carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
