Job Summary
Plan, provide, and monitor individualized psychiatric and medical nursing care for preschool, school-age, or adolescent patients following established policies. Perform therapeutic interventions and collaborate effectively with the healthcare team while managing crisis interventions and ensuring patient and staff safety. Evaluate data related to psychiatric emergencies including vital signs, LOC, Glasgow coma scale, and lab tests. Maintain a safe environment for individuals with alterations in mental or behavioral health. Requires current Virginia RN license, CPR training, and familiarity with the Emergency Mental Health Nurse role within the ED.
Required Qualifications
- Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license
- CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire
- Associates in Nursing/Diploma in Nursing
- Experience in both pediatric medical and psychiatric settings
- Pediatric experience
- Increased Security Clearance Required for Job Roles at Children's Pavilion or in any licensed DBHDS program we offer: FBI fingerprinting, criminal background check, and Child Protective Services Registry Search

- Skilled in intake interviewing
- Culturally sensitive expertise in crisis intervention techniques
- Exceptional interpersonal communication
- Psychiatric population familiarity
- Psychotropic medication knowledge
- Understands and evaluates data related to psychiatric emergency: Vital signs/LOC Glasgow coma scale; Lab tests (routine bloodwork, urine toxicology screen)
- Demonstrated understanding of the Emergency Mental Health Nurse and their role within the ED
- Demonstrated ability to provide a safe environment and interventions to manage alterations in mental/behavioral health and ensure patient and staff safety
