Job Summary
Assess patients' lactation needs by obtaining medical histories, examining patients, and gathering information about the baby and family setting. Perform comprehensive nursing assessments of the patient and infant, including vital signs, physical assessment, and identification of complications. Collaborate with patients to establish breastfeeding goals based on evidence-based practices and develop feeding plans addressing nutritional needs. Consult, educate, and advise lactating patients with breastfeeding challenges while conducting group sessions to support breastfeeding patients. Provide evidence-based information regarding medication, alcohol, tobacco, and street drug use during lactation. Consult with inter-disciplinary team members, perform follow-ups, and refer abnormal findings to the provider. Assist with breastfeeding program development, reporting, and selection of supplies and educational materials.
Required Qualifications
- One year of experience as a Registered Nurse in Obstetric and/or Newborn nursing
- Community or public health experience
- Associates degree
- Current, unrestricted Oregon RN License
- Current International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant Certification (IBCLC)
- Basic life support and Pediatric advanced life support certification
- Oregon driver's license
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)
- Enthusiastic about breastfeeding and passionate about helping patients enjoy a positive and successful breastfeeding experience
- Ability to teach and coach patients
- Proficient knowledge and ability to use a computer and other office technology (i.e., telephone, fax, etc.)
- Effective navigation and documentation in an electronic medical record
- Attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in complex situations
