Rifle/Shotgun Merit Badge Counselor

Job Summary

Ensure range safety at all times while instructing and coaching Merit Badge students in classroom or range environments. Maintain 100% accountability for all firearms, ammunition, and equipment, submitting NRA Course reports and electronically tracking completions accurately and timely. Keep work areas clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe. Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership and abide by policies outlined in the staff handbook. Complete the Annual Health and Medical Record. Work involves standing, walking, and hiking up to 9 hours daily with a lift capacity of 70 pounds. The role requires a minimum age of 21 and includes becoming a registered Scouting America member with background screening. Requires Microsoft Teams proficiency for daily communication.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum age: 21+
  • NRA Certified Instructor (Rifle, Shotgun)
  • NRA Certified Range Safety Officer (RSO)

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in competitive shooting or hunting, any discipline
  • Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (includes background screening)
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication
  • High emotional intelligence (such as self/social awareness and team dynamics)
  • Positive and cheerful attitude with a strong customer-service focus
  • Adaptability in a fast-paced environment with ability to learn/develop hard and soft skills
  • Ability to connect with individuals from diverse age groups, maturity, and backgrounds
