Job Summary
Copa Health seeks an experienced Certified Behavioral Health Services Medical Coder to review clinical documentation and assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes for behavioral health and integrated care services. Responsibilities include abstracting and coding documentation across behavioral health, psychiatric, counseling, crisis intervention, and integrated care services; ensuring compliance with AHCCCS, Medicaid, Medicare, CMS, and payer guidelines; serving as a subject matter expert on coding standards; and providing education to providers and staff on coding best practices and regulatory requirements. Requires strong knowledge of behavioral health terminology, regulatory requirements, and payer-specific guidelines; proficiency with EHRs and coding software; and ability to interpret complex coding regulations. Location: Mesa, Arizona (US) with in-person work. The role emphasizes coding accuracy, documentation integrity, and staff education across behavioral health programs.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Medical Coding, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred
- Minimum of three (3) years of professional medical coding experience in behavioral health, mental health, psychiatric services, or integrated healthcare settings
- Current medical coding certification required, such as CPC, CCS, COC, or equivalent
- Completion of a Behavioral Health Coding certification course, specialty training program, or documented specialization in behavioral health/psychiatric coding is required
- Demonstrated expertise using ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems within behavioral health settings
- Strong working knowledge of AHCCCS, Medicaid, Medicare, CMS, and payer-specific behavioral health billing requirements
- Experience conducting coding audits, documentation reviews, and compliance monitoring activities preferred
- Prior experience presenting trainings, facilitating workshops, or leading staff education sessions strongly preferred
- Proficiency with Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, Microsoft Office applications, and coding/billing software
