Respiratory Therapy Extern

Under the observation of a licensed respiratory therapist, extern will perform routine and basic respiratory therapy procedures including oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry, aerosol therapy, and incentive spirometry; assist with maintaining and organizing respiratory therapy equipment; collect and reprocess equipment per infection-prevention guidelines; participate in annual competencies; assist with patient positioning and transport as needed with proper technique; demonstrate knowledge of growth and development to provide age-appropriate care; and pursue ongoing learning of equipment, procedures, and processes. Must be enrolled in a respiratory therapy program and hold Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Externs in Wisconsin may transition into graduate respiratory therapist positions; physical requirements include lifting and moving patients/equipment; expects ability to work in a hospital setting with standard precautions and infection control practices.
